3 Musts for Mardi Gras – November 5th, 2011

Are you trying to get Mardi Gras decorations for a party you’re throwing? The first thing people think of is beads, and those are a must, but there are many other things you need to add to get that New Orleans Mardi Gras vibe. Here are three things to add to your list to make sure your party looks great:

1. Colors. People forget that, just like Christmas or Saint Paddy’s Day, Mardi Gras has its own set of traditional colors. These are purple, green and yellow. You can deck a place with all the beads you want, but if it is just a plain white room it will not capture the right spirit. Consider streamers, candles, food and drinks in these colors to really bring the spirit out.

2. Masks. Mardi Gras is a time of cutting loose before the austere fasting of Lent. That means people want to break all the rules and sin a little before they go on their best behavior. Masks originated as a way of cloaking your identity so no one knew it was you making out in public or dancing with your shirt off. That’s why the traditional Mardi Gras mask does not cover the mouth! You have to be able to drink and kiss. Get some masks and encourage people to cut loose.

3. Finally, face paint. This serves the same role as masks but it allows more creativity. You can just apply a little to your cheeks in whatever pattern you want or deck out your whole body!
